Starting up your own business is for many the culmination of their personal dream. I'm sure we all have had happy and disappointing memories of working for small and large companies, but when you're out on your own, it's you who is calling the shots and you live and die on the strengths of your decisions. There is no room and no time to blame others.
Unfortunately, a high percentatge of new business startups do not see the second year of trading. The core reasons for this are a lack of planning, lack of or poor business plan, inability to find funding through difficult times, lack of research into the target market, inability to find and connect with sufficient customers. Poor customer service and lack of repeat business. That first year is critical in getting your name out there and establishing your brand.
For twenty years now I have run my own successful IT training company BDV-UNIX-SKILLS and I have travelled throughout Europe delivering courses to young and enthusiatic graduates. In recent years I have been involved with and founded the College of Public Speaking, one of the UK's top speaker development companies with customers like Buckingham Palace, the Ministry of Justice, The Treasury, BT etc.
How does a new business survive and prosper through difficult times? Well, there's no magic wand to wave and I do not believe in get rich quick methods. The secret is hard work, sound planning and finance, the right advice for your business from trusted advisors and then years of hard work to establish, grow and build your own unique brand.
Running a business is hard work, but over a period of time when you find and refine the winning formula of offering and delivering something that your customers really need, it's a truly wonderful experience. To the main message is to concentrate and engage with your target market. Listen carefully to what your potential customers are saying and then deliver to them with superb customer care.
